Mexican cuisine and Los Angeles go together like a hand in glove, oil and vinegar, chocolate and vanilla…you get the picture. As such, there’s no shortage of Mexican food anywhere in the city, wherever you look, whether that constitutes a humble taco truck or semi-formal sit-down restaurant – the key is deciding what you want and what kind of experience you’re looking for.
With the summer sun heating up and families coming together for meals now that school is out, we felt there was no better time to round up our favorite taco spots around Woodland Hills. Now, San Diego citizens will argue that they have California’s best tacos, but Angelinos sure aren’t hurting for places to go…and we’re going to prove that in this Woodland Hills Magazine article. Tuck into street taco classics like Beer-Battered Cod and Cochinita Pibil and upmarket vegetarian options like Cauliflower al Pastor, because sky’s the limit when it comes to the following locales.
Taqueria el Tapatio #1, located at 22806 Victory Boulevard, has been serving loyal customers for the last 24 years, offering a plethora of authentic foods to satisfy that customer base throughout the Canoga Park, Reseda and West Hills areas. The menu here offers comprehensive lunch and dinner selections made from scratch daily and served with personalized service and unsurpassed value – case in point: Taqueria el Tapatio’s fan-favorite Taquitos, Two-Taco Platter and incredible Super Nachos. Indulge in the delicious rice, refried beans and Agua Fresca while you’re here satisfying your taco craving, and then try the house chips with red and green salsa. Open daily from 8 am to 10 pm.
Chuy’s Tacos Dorados, located at 6220 Topanga Canyon Boulevard Suite 9080, brings a 70-year-old fried taco family recipe from Culiacan to Woodland Hills taco fans, adding a twist for the SoCal market – Potato and Slow Simmered Shredded Beef Tacos are served with warm salsa and topped with lime pickled onions. How’s that for a twist? With two locations in the Arts District and Westfield Topanga The Village, Chuy’s Tacos Dorados serves fresh, authentic and tasty tacos dorados (fried tacos) made with USDA Grade shredded beef slow cooked for over four hours. What’s more, Chuy’s potatoes are always fresh, hand-peeled and cooked on-premises. Open 11 am to 9 pm Monday through Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 11 am to 10 pm and Sunday from 11 am to 7 pm.
Casa de Papi, located at 22330 Sherman Way in Canoga Park, serves delicious Mexican food including breakfast burritos, Spinach and Cheese Empanadas and Carnitas Tacos – all at an affordable price with excellent customer service. As if you probably guessed by now, the menu here is pretty straightforward, with tacos, burritos, plates, quesadillas and tortas stuffed with your choice of meat, and the restaurant even offers an all-day breakfast menu. Enjoy complimentary nachos with two types of salsa, as well as house-made rice bursting with authentic Mexican flavor – any way you go, you can’t go wrong with Casa de Papi when a taco craving is taking hold. Open from 11 am to 6 pm Tuesday through Saturday; closed Sunday and Monday.
Zamorales Grill, originating at 5800 Topanga Canyon Boulevard but normally operating at Warner Center Park on Califa Street and Topanga Canyon, is a food truck that has become well-known for its super-authentic Shrimp Tacos, Carne Asada Tostada, Al Pastor Taco and Fish Tacos, so if it’s fancy tacos you want, look no further. One of the top sellers, besides the aforementioned specialties, is the Carne Asada Fries, but Zamorales also serves non-Mexican traditionals like Philly Cheesesteak – so there is no going wrong with anything on this menu. Open Monday through Friday 12 pm to 8:30 pm; non-operational Saturday and Sunday.
Birria and Pozole to Go, located at 6551 Topanga Canyon Boulevard, serves fresh birria many different ways, including but certainly not limited to Tacos Dorados and Burrito de Birria – but that’s just the beginning of the Birria and Pozole to Go experience. This is the only spot in town (that we’ve found) that makes Birria Pizza, a special treat that beckons you to pick up a slice, dip it in the accompanying consume and enjoy the good life. Everything here is delicious, from the Birria Tacos to the extra-spicy sauces on the side, and the service can’t be beat, either. Open daily from 9 am to 8 pm.
One thing you can always count on in LA is awesome food, but more specifically, to-die-for tacos. As such, Woodland Hills has become a hub for some of the best taco spots and trucks, which is what spurred us to highlight some of the best picks across the region in this article. Enjoy and eat up!
