The Southern California climate offers the perfect environment for fresh fruits and vegetables to grow and thrive, all year round, and this means we have access to some of the most premium produce – straight from the farms. All that’s left to do is pick a farmers market, make a shopping list and head out…simple, isn’t it?
Well, if you’ve seen some of the overwhelming options that are out there just in the Woodland Hills area, it may not be as rudimentary as it seems. That’s where Woodland Hills Magazine comes in, as we understand the desire for a freshly-plucked apple from a locally-operated farm as opposed to a shiny, waxed-up, unidentifiable variant from an everyday grocery store.
The most important aspects of shopping at a farmers market have to do with not only buying local but supporting our farmers and producers and taking ownership of what we choose to put in our bodies. To that end, we’ve compiled our favorite farmers markets near Woodland Hills in the hope that every Angelino explores and supports the many communities that make our city so special.
One thing we would like to mention: In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and its resulting effects on most industries, the following businesses may or may not be adhering to usual business hours or shopping conditions; check with the particular venue if you have any questions or concerns.
Old Town Calabasas Farmers Market, located at 23504 Calabasas Road in Calabasas, has become a favorite weekend social and shopping spot over the years, offering plenty of free parking and an assortment of vendors selling fresh produce and a variety of foods. The market also now offers wine and a premium selection of flowers, to say nothing about its plethora of unique items like almond butter, pistachio butter, dried fruits, fresh eggs, juicy and sweet oranges and much more.
Malibu Farmers Market, located at 23555 Civic Center Way in Malibu, is often called a “low-key market experience” that hasn’t quite caught on with L.A.’s quasi-rabid Sunday farmers market crowd – and yet it’s the market’s compact size that makes the experience so enjoyable. Set up in the local library parking lot, within walking distance of the Country Mart, this is where you’ll find the freshest seasonal produce, driven in from local organic farmers in the morning, pastries and snacks by small family-owned businesses and the prettiest just-picked flowers. Best of all, there is normally plenty of available parking.
Encino Farmers Market, located at 17400 Victory Boulevard between Balboa and White Oak in Encino, offers plenty of convenient parking and a variety of California-grown fruits and vegetables from certified organic farmers. It also features fresh flowers, eggs, chicken and grass-fed beef, honey, plants and more, and offers prepared food such as gourmet tamales, vegan products, coffee, tea, fruit smoothies, two bakeries and a fish monger. Some vendors go even further to offer unique products like hand-made soaps, candles, hats, clothing and even jewelry. This is the complete farmers market experience in Woodland Hills…one in which you are supporting local growers, artisans and small businesses.
Canoga Park Farmers Market, located at 7248 Owensmouth Avenue in Canoga Park, represents a gem amidst the markets populating the L.A. vicinity, what with its selection of organic strawberries and other organic fruits, organic funnel cakes, a Chicharron stand, flowers and more. At the Main Street Canoga Park Famers Market, as it is officially referred to, folks come from near and far to experience the freshest produce always picked the day before.
Food, whether cooked or fresh, paints a vibrant picture of L.A.’s diversity, with bustling farmers markets tucked into every nook and cranny…to the point that picking one to visit seems impossible. Our hope is that the Woodland Hills Magazine staff has provided you with the top choices the next time you are hankering for a farmer’s market experience in Woodland Hills.
