While much of the country is still struggling with a rather obnoxious winter, complete with rambunctious snow storms and wildly gusting winds, America’s West Coast has been treated to some delightfully temperate weather, and Californians are always quick to take advantage of such conditions. It is indeed true that most of the world outside the Golden State immediately thinks of California and conjures up visions of expansive, white sand beaches and impeccable surfing – but when the rain and cold hibernate and the rich West Coast sun shines on California’s glistening coast, there are so many additional outdoor activities to explore…all it takes is the right guide.
From hiking to biking and much to do in between, the Woodland Hills area of L.A. is replete with outdoor activities to enjoy as the weather remains sunny. Here are some of our favorite picks for fun outdoor activities in Woodland Hills:
Take a Hike in Serrania Park
Woodland Hills’ Serrania Park, sprawled out across 20865 Wells Drive, draws outdoor types with its horseshoe-shaped grassy area – ideal for gentle strolls and families with young children – and the plethora of friendly canines and their companions that frequent this beautiful spot. Located just south of Ventura Boulevard, Serrania Park also features a trail with a moderate climb that is easy to follow, with incredible views of the park below, Woodland Hills Country Club, the entire Westchester County community and San Fernando Valley. Come spring, plentiful flowers bloom all over this awe-inspiring park for all to enjoy and relish, and there’s always ample parking.
Go the Farmer’s Market
A favorite weekend social and shopping venue (as well as a top pick for outdoor activities in Woodland Hills suggestions) for many years now, the Calabasas Farmers Market is situated in Old Town, Calabasas on Calabasas Road just west of El Canon Avenue and is open every Saturday, rain or shine, from 8 am to 1 pm. The market features a vast assortment of vendors boasting fresh produce and a variety of foods, and now offers wine as well as a great selection of flowers. Another exciting and popular market in the Woodland Hills area is The Village at Westfield Topanga Farmers Market, located at the mega-complex known as The Village at Westfield and which is the brainchild of California Certified Farmers Markets – the founding entity behind the Calabasas Farmers Market. Every Sunday between 9 and 1 pm, The Village at Westfield Topanga Farmers Market presents an extensive selection of farm-fresh produce to the local community, all sourced from noted California farmers as Etheridge Farms, Maggie’s Farms, Country Fresh, Alexander Ranch, Bloom Honey and many others.
Hit a Bike Trail
There’s nothing better on a sun-drenched Southern California day than grabbing that bike and hitting a lush trail. With a plethora of trails located throughout California itself, hunting down the right one for your exact needs or expectations can be somewhat daunting – but, as always, Woodland Hills Magazine is here to help. In the West Hills of Los Angeles, bike enthusiasts can choose from such locales as the Upper Las Virgenes Canyon Open Space Preserve at Victory Boulevard and Gilmore Street, Chatsworth Oaks Park at 9301 Valley Circle Boulevard in Chatsworth, Santa Susana State Historic Park at 22400 Devonshire Street, Cheeseboro Hiking Trails on Chesebro Road in Agoura Hills and Corriganville Park at 7001 Smith Road in Simi Valley…just to name a mere few. More information about these trails, and more, can be obtained by visiting here and Map My Ride.
Attend an Outdoor Boot Camp Class
Offering something unique to try in the “fun outdoor activities in Woodland Hills” category, Ben’s Bootcamp Fitness, located at 21781 Ventura Boulevard, is the brainchild of a life coach, registered nurse and a meditation, cognitive awareness and body rejuvenation counselor who shows others how to be proactive as opposed to reactive.
